From 100 to +5.000 teleworkers in less than a week

“The history of Técnicas Reunidas is a story of effort, continuous improvement, and success, none of which would have been possible without the contribution of its employees, who are one of the company’s differentiating factors.”

This is one of the first sentences that visitors come across on the Técnicas Reunidas website. This statement helps us understand how the company has managed to set up teleworking in record time, with the help of its technological partner Aryse, to ensure the continuity of its business during the state of alert to combat the Covid-19 health crisis.

The Challenge

To maintain the company’s activity, ensuring the safety, health, and work-life balance of staff during the Covid-19 crisis, by putting in place the conditions that would allow practically all the 5,000 employees in Spain to work from home.

The solution

Just a few days before the state of alert was declared we had a company that, because of its customer and business profile based on construction projects for international plants across the globe, did not have a teleworking culture in Spain. With logical exceptions such as employees on the move in other countries.

The qualitative leap made by Técnicas Reunidas in less than a week in Spain in terms of teleworking was tremendous: in just a few days its entire Spanish workforce had started working from home, despite not having a previous culture of teleworking; the maximum peak of teleworkers in Spain before Covid-19 was around 100.

This shift to teleworking includes everyone from engineering staff, who require powerful telematic tools to develop the complex projects undertaken by Técnicas Reunidas, to purchasing staff, in a company that spends almost 4,000 million euros on purchasing and subcontracting, with the added difficulty of implementing it in more than 50 countries across five continents.

Despite not having had a period of adaptation, the result has been exceptional. The response of the entire Técnicas Reunidas team, together with the technological solution deployed by Ikusi and the foresight of the company’s IT team who, at the end of February (three weeks before implementation of the state of alert), had anticipated a crisis situation, made it possible to move from on-site working to teleworking in record time.

To all this we must add the philosophy of the company’s management, which, even before the state of alert was declared, had stressed the importance of the safety, health and work-life balance of its staff and, consequently, the possibility of maintaining the continuity of its business activities.

After completion of the first phase of the project, new phases need to be implemented. A monitoring phase is already being deployed, as well as an important additional phase, which involves transferring the collaboration and security tools solution deployed by Aryse to the rest of the Técnicas Reunidas’ offices around the world. This will be followed by another phase, to develop the solutions deployed so far.
